There’s overwhelming evidence that diets don’t work long term. Only 3% of those who lose weight on a diet keep it off for even one year. This is a dismal track record yet every year thousands of new diet books are published and millions of people buy these books and try these diets. What these books don’t tell you is; the diet is going to cause more problems than it solves. Many therapists are now recognizing dieting as an addiction. It is a trap.
I heard the theory for decades that when you diet you body thinks there’s no food available and it resets your metabolism so that it hangs on to fat. The most convincing story I’ve heard supporting this theory is in the book “Diet’s Don’t Work” by Dr. Bob Schwartz, Ph. D. He owned a health club. Many of his customers wanted to lose weight. His weight was normal but he went on diets in order to prove to his customers that these diets work. They all worked as long as he was on them but when he finished the diet and went back to eating normally he put on more pounds than he’d lost. After doing this repeatedly he was 50 pounds overweight and miserable. He stopped dieting and started using some of the techniques you will learn in the Thin Hypnosis course. He lost the extra 50 pounds and went back to being his naturally thin self.
There were a few members of his health club that wanted to GAIN weight. They tried eating constantly but nothing worked. No matter how much they ate they could not gain weight. Dr. Schwartz put them on a low calorie diet telling them, “Eat this way and you will gain weight.” At first they lost weight and they were furious about it. But in a few weeks they all gained more than they had lost.” It worked. Each time they went back on a weight loss diet, they gained back larger amounts than they lost. These people where very happy about this but those of us who wanted to lose weight and keep it off have been repeatedly tortured by this phenomenon.
Dr. Bob Schwartz did research on dieters for over 35 years. He write, Diets do work – in reverse. Diets work to make you fatter. This was certainly my experience and that of hundreds of my students.
This is what happens to so many people who go on diets. We lose weight only to gain it back and more to boot. Then we go back to dieting because now we need to lose weight more than ever. We lose and then gain even more over and over again. I know people who have been doing this for decades and they have just gotten wider and heavier. Some of them eat very little food but they can’t lose weight.
Because of the constant failure dieters endure, your self esteem can really take a BIG hit. You start to feel like a failure. The truth is the diets have failed you! It’s not your fault that your dieting didn’t give you the results you wanted. Every dieter suffers the same failure. You are NOT week willed or lazy.
When I used to diet the first thing I would do after deciding to start another diet was to eat all the stuff I knew I wouldn’t be allowed to have on the diet. I was overeating just at the thought of the restrictions I was about to impose on myself. This “Last Supper” kind of overeating is very common. It left me feeling ashamed and defeated before I even started. I didn’t even enjoy the stuff I was shoveling in because of the guilt feelings.
Because of the hardship of dieting, it is very likely that at some point the dieter will say, “I give up.” Then the extreme overeating starts. I use to stuff myself so full that I felt physically and mentally sick. No matter what I ate, it was not enjoyable at all. Binge-eating is a horrible experience.
In the book “The Psychologist’s Eat Anything Diet” Leonard Pearson, PH.D. wrote Diets are jails unfit for human beings. Binging is a jail break. When you have the feeling that tomorrow the jailers will be back in power, maybe forever after, the binge becomes a necessity for emotional survival. No human being can live with so bleak a prospect as never again being allowed to do (or eat) what she/he wants. In this way the binging does have psychological value – it is an assertion of basic rights and a rejections of enslavement. In other words it is a healthy response to dietary deprivation.
It’s like telling yourself, Don’t think about monkeys. The more you try NOT to think of monkeys, the more you think of them. Many dieters lose control in the presence of cakes, ice cream, pies, chips, pizza etc. even when they are not physically hungry. Why? It’s because it is forbidden. In the Thin Hypnosis program there’s no diets and no forbidden foods. You learn to listen to the internal signals of hunger and fullness coming from your body.
Dieting is a major cause of overeating. There are 2 other big causes. #1 The programming that is in your subconscious mind. Read THE ROOT CAUSE OF OVEREATING to learn more. #2. Stress Eating, sometimes called emotional eating. It’s when you eat, even though you are not physically hungry, because eating helps you deal with stress or uncomfortable emotions.
Thin Hypnosis corrects all of these causes so you have no need or desire to overeat. Hypnosis works in the deepest, most primitive part of your brain to make LASTING CHANGES in your thinking, feelings and behavior.
When you go on a diet you are saying, somebody else knows what is best for me. You eat according to a diet plan. You measure or weigh your food. You are supposed to ignore you feelings of hunger. There’s no mention of tuning in to your body’s inner wisdom. So like a muscle that isn’t used you lose touch with you own inner sense of what your body needs.
After losing 35 pounds one of my students said, “I was always looking for someone to tell me how to eat and what to eat. I tried diet after diet but I got nothing but frustrated. One day I said to myself, ’What am I doing? I’ve got to stop looking to books and diets to tell me how to eat.”
